Nara was Japan's capital before Kyoto and has has a deep cultural heritage. Feed the free-roaming deer in Nara Park; visit the enchanting Todai-ji temple and the charming old streets in the merchant area of Naramachi.

Stay an extra day and walk the historic Yagyu Kaido trail, following in the footsteps of warriors who took this route to the sword-making village of Yagyu.


Nara is an ideal side-trip from the nearby city of Kyoto.

Day 1 Travel to Nara

Travel by train to Nara just south of Kyoto. Undertake one of our two hikes or explore the traditional Nara-machi area of the town.

We recommend undertaking our Yamanobe no Michi Walk on your first day in Nara.

Elevation gain: negligible ascent and descent
Time required: About 5 hours of optional walking

Day 2 Sightseeing in Nara

Today there is a chance to undertake the Yagyu Kaido hike from Yagyu village back to Nara. The full hike is challenging at 20.2km, and we also offer a shorter 11.7km option from Enjo-ji Temple. Both hikes end with a wonderful stoll through Nara Park, with its famous deer and temples.


Walking distance: 20.2km / 12.5 miles (11.7km / 7.3 miles from Enjo-ji)
Elevation gain: 610m / 2000 feet of ascent and 785m / 2575 feet of descent (240m / 790 feet of ascent and 535m / 1755 feet of descent from Enjo-ji)

Day 3 Depart from Nara

Head onwards by train from Nara. In the morning explore the town further and take in further landmarks such at Todaiji Temple.
